A muscular, masculine malt from one of Islay 's most under-rated distilleries. Caol Ila has been quietly producing great whisky for a long time and this big peaty dram is a terrific example.

TASTING NOTES Nose: Heather, woodsmoke and bonfires, damson jam, ginger, clove. Develops into a more turfy character with a hint of homemade marmalade. Opens up with a drop of water. Palate: Full-bodied, with a powerful woodsmoke entry accompanied by burnt hay, floral notes and a generous hit of hot spices. A lot of differing smoky nuances from the peat, with turf and coal smoke much in evidence on a bed of sweet, silky malt and fine oak tannins. Water helps some pleasant grassy notes to emerge from the roar of the peat. Finish: Long and warming. The peat rumbles on, balanced by the malt and oak and persistent peppery spice. |
